Selena Gomez's camp says she doesn't have serious issues with addiction and/or Justin Bieber, and that her rehab trip was mostly due to being "burned out."
The star alarmed fans and surprised many in the gossip-reading public when she announced she was cancelling the Australian and Asian legs of her tour.
Selena said in a statement in December:
"It has become clear to me and those close to me that after many years of putting my work first, I need to spend some time on myself in order to be the best person I can be."
It was later revealed that Selena Gomez went to rehab at the Dawn at The Meadows recovery center in Arizona on January 5, only to bail after two weeks.
Rumors have been flying that she's hung up on her relationship with Justin Bieber, and had been partying hard using alcohol, weed and prescription drugs.
Bieber's people deny blame, saying she's a party girl who makes her own decisions and has only herself to blame for them. Her camp tells a different story.
Gomez's team isn't pointing any fingers at Bieber, but sticking to the company line that a grueling schedule of concerts, tours and movies wore her down.
"Project wellness," says a Gomez source. "She was burnt out after a relentless year of back-to-back films, concerts, TV, touring and all the promotional work.
"She just needed a break."
Regarding reports that Selena was using multiple drugs before her spell in rehab, the insider disputed this, insisting the singer is not that type of girl:
''She's not that girl. Does she party and have the occasional joint? Yes. Does she drink when she goes out? Yes. But she's not struggling with drug addiction or alcoholism."
This would be consistent, at least, with Gomez's reason for bailing on her six-week program after two, seeing no reason to go back for more treatment.
"I've never seen her out of control," the insider added.
